During the visit to Special Collections, I picked up a small green booklet. It was issued by the University of Miami in the 1960s to all undergraduate women who attended the school. The booklet laid out all of the guidelines as to how women should behave on campus, giving strict curfews and rules that every woman was expected to abide by.
While reading the rule book, I wondered what it was like to go to school here during that time. I was taken aback at the strict guidelines women had to follow. I often forget that Miami is in the South. It feels like a completely different world here, but I guess it was not always like this.
I can't imagine the University without all of its diversity. Jews and blacks were not even allowed into the town of Coral Gables at that time. Now it feels like every person here comes from a different cultural background. I always thought the 60s was about this revolution but reading the handbook made me realize how far off I was.
