Spectacle is nowhere more apparent than in the University of Miami. Why? For the reason that many people come to “Suntan-U” because it offers education and leisure at the same time. Who wouldn’t want to study in a campus, full of tropical flora and fauna, complete with a swimming pool and a massage therapy program at the Wellness Center? And I have to admit, that is one reason I, too, came to UM. Why should I suffer harsh New York winters at Fordham, or even the northerly weather of Gainesville, when I could enjoy the mild climate near home? And the spectacle continues even after we are admitted, especially at Homecoming.
We burned a boat. What was the point of building a boat, from scratch, and then setting it ablaze? And celebrating its demise with a show of fireworks? Supposedly, this exhibition would determine if we would win the homecoming game. The flag of the boat fell before the boat burned, so we would win the football game against Duke. It doesn’t matter that the football team for Duke University is not very skilled at the sport. It doesn’t matter that the University of Miami football team played with new strategies. None of it matters, because we burned a boat.
This pointless, yet surprisingly fun, extravaganza continued with the subsequent concert from a famous rapper by the name of Ludacris. It turned out to be the biggest spectacle of all time, complete with fog machines and colored stage lighting. The entire hour and half before this rapper actually showed up, a DJ played obnoxiously loud club music. And then Ludacris also rapped to obnoxiously loud club music. Now, I have nothing against club music, but I left that concert nearly deaf and extremely tired. What was the point to this ludicrous dance party? There was none.
I have to admit, it was a nice distraction from the piles of homework that have been accumulating on my desk throughout the week. But back to reality.
